BIO
Name: Guillermo Altadill
Born: June 15, 1962
Home Town: Barcelona, Spain
Bio: Guillermo indisputably is one of Spain’s foremost and most respected sailors. With an outstanding racing experience ranging from sports catamarans to giant record-breaking multihulls, he also had a taste of the America’s Cup, having recently been involved in United Team Germany’s campaign. Known for his “red hot” approach to racing, the Spanish competitor doesn’t count the hours he spends at sea, training whatever the conditions. His professional skills have made him one of the world’s most sought-after watch captains for round-the-world races, and he has already sailed around the globe 6 times – notably holding, in 2004, the absolute record for the fastest circumnavigation, setting a new benchmark of 58 days along with Steve Fossett’s crew on Cheyennne.
Born in Barcelona, this father of four is naturally delighted to see his native town host a major planetary event such as the Barcelona World Race, and to skipper a boat proudly flying his national flag. “Over the past few years, he says, I haven’t sailed for Spain because I’ve been involved with other teams and projects, but it’s good to now race for my country. It’s the first time that I’ll be racing with a Spanish sponsor and starting from Barcelona. It’s a great package.” Having been Spanish champion in the Soling and Tornado classes, Guillermo will of course get an incredible amount of support from the sailing enthusiasts across his country!
