Jamie Sterling Wins BWWT Contest in Peru, Now First in World Rankings

jamie-sterling-sunglasses

From Surfline.com;

Solid, 20-foot-plus surf lumbered over Pico Alto’s famed reef on Thursday, the result of a Southern Hemisphere swell that aimed its energy right at South America.

The wave itself, for one, made it clear that Pico Alto belonged on the fledgling Big Wave World Tour. How big? Eventual winner Sterling and Mav’s winner Chris Bertish, both endured two wave hold-downs — Bertish coughing up blood and unable to finish the heat. In his first heat, Peruvian Rafael Velarde broke the board that he had ridden to two previous Billabong Pico Alto finals.

Twiggy nailed a perfect ten in the semifinals but couldn’t find a backup score; Burle and Tashnick charged all event, but couldn’t overtake Sterling, who tackled the giant walls on his backhand.

In Jamie’s words;

“Achieving 1st place in Billabong’s Pico Alto Invitational has been a career goal. It was a huge confidence booster to win in 20-ft surf with an A-list of the world’s best and most bravest big wave surfers. In November of 2009 at Waimea Bay while practicing for the Eddie Aikau, I dislocated my right shoulder when I fell very awkwardly on a drop. It was one the worst injuries of my surfing career, sitting me out on the sidelines with a withdrawal from the Eddie. To make matters worse, it was also one of the best big wave Winters to sweep through the North Shore in 10 years! I basically missed the most prestigious big wave invitational contest the North Shore has to offer, as well as the most epic El Nino Winter. Luckily, I’m now 100% recovered and looking forward to competing full-time on the new Big Wave World Tour.”

Jamie Sterling also now sits in first place in the overall 2010/2011 BWWT rankings.

Congrats to Jamie!

Lakey Peterson Back to Back NSSA Champion

lakey-peterson

Lakey Petersen (Joss Black G12) took her second consecutive NSSA National Open Women’s Title this last weekend at Huntington Beach pier. Pushed up against the clock, Lakey sat in second place, until in the final seconds an interference call on leader Nage Melamed cut the young Hawaiian’s second score in half giving Lakey the win. “Really, I couldn’t be happier,” Peterson said. “The waves didn’t really offer much out there, but I did what I could with the ones that I got. That’s how surfing is.”

jesse-guglielmana-surf-sunglasses

Fellow Kaenon surfer Jesse Guglielmana (Burnet Havana G12) also surfed his way into the Junior Men’s finals. Jesse managed to out-perform poor conditions by dropping big moves including a frontside three, landing it clean and earning strong scores and a well-earned second place.

Lucas Angulo from Kauai also surfed solid all the way to the Semi finals in the boy’s division.  Lucas wears Burnet Black G12.

Jamie Sterling Lends a Hand to Save the Wave

jamie-sterling-jetty

Jamie is finally back. After a tough setback due to a shoulder injury earlier this year (see: Wipe Out at Waimea Bay),
Jamie Sterling (Jetty, Matte Black, G12 lens) came back in fine form, placing 4th in 15-18 foot surf in Chile’s Quiksilver Cermonial contest. He was down in Chile for multiple reasons, not solely to compete in the prestigious big wave event, but to give back to the community that has given him so much.

jamie-sterling-barrel

Pichilemu, Chile was hit really hard by the recent 8.8 earthquakes and tsunami in February. Jamie, together with Chilean surfers Ramón Navarro, Diego Medina, and Leo Acevedo, traveled to the badly damaged coastal city of Constitución with Save The Waves foundation coordinators to deliver food, clothing and other supplies to local school children and other relief organizations such as the Red Cross and Un Techo Para Chile, who are building temporary housing in many damaged areas.

jamie-sterling-sunglasses

Congrats Jamie for your comeback and for lending a hand to those in need.

jamie-sterling-debris

Jamie surveys the damage from the recent events.
Surfing this wave is phenomenal, but spectators get an equal rush standing on the cliff above
More damage and Jamie giving out goodies.

Paige Alms Surfs in Pipeline Women’s Pro, Takes Second

Kaenon’s Paige Alms is known for charging the big stuff. At the Pipeline Women’s Pro on the North Shore last week, she wasn’t rewarded with huge waves, but she did surf well, ending up second overall.

paige-alms-surf-sunglasses

The event is the only Women’s contest at Pipeline and organizers waited until the last day to run the competition as heavy winds, big NE swells and massive sand build-up delayed the start. This grassroots event drew an international field of competition and allowed young surfers to test their competitive prowess against seasoned veterans. While everybody wanted the waves to be bigger, the female athletes were still able to showcase their skills on the world’s most dangerous wave.

Paige flew over from Maui to surf in the contest. Taking a podium spot is a great accomplishment at such a prestigious break–congrats Paige!

Joe Diamond Leaves His Mark

At the first stop of Arnette’s All Day Surf Series the waves were small but the groms still charged. In the end, it was Kaenon’s Joe Diamond coming out on top for the win. Nothing like seeing a Kaenon sponsored athlete WIN an event sponsored by another sunglass company!

Speaking of, Joe also just won another accolade–at a recent Volcom Blowfish Series event in Cardiff, California, he took home the Electric Volt Thrower “Move of the Day and $50 in cash for his frontside reverse in the Juniors Final.

Surf Groms Update

lakey-peterson

From Lakey, “I just got back from an amazing two-month trip through New Zealand and Australia! I started out in NZ where I did the ISA world junior championships. Basically every country from around the world that has a surf team take what they think is the best four girls and eight boys to represent their country. I had a great time and felt like I surfed really well. I ended up getting fourth in that event so I was stoked… fourth in the world for me isn’t too bad!”

Lakey Peterson wears Burny Tortoise G12.

lucas-angulo

Lucas Angulo, who wears Bolsa, made it to both Finals in his divisions (Open Boys and Explorer Menehune), ending up with a 6th in Open Boys and a 2nd in Explorer Menehune. Heis now ranked 3rd in the Hawaii Region in Explorer Menehune and 4th in the region in Open Boys, and has qualified for Nationals in Open Boys, Explorer Menehune, Open Juniors and Explorer Boys. Lucas surfed in nine heats over the three-day event and made it to the Finals in his two main divisions. He also made it through a couple of heats in the older boys divisions, securing his place in those two divisions as well for Nationals.

porter-hogan

The latest from Porter: “My last event was held at the South Side of the Huntington Pier. I was happy to be competing in the S.A.L.S.A Surfing event because it was a charity contest for Lou Gehrigs disease and I was proud to show my support. I was competing in the combined mens and pro division. The waves were good and I was ready for an eventful day. After about 4 heats of solid surfing I found myself in the finals. With the tide shifting to high I knew that it would be a difficult final. I ended up getting some fun waves and finished 2nd.”

Porter Hogan Takes Second in San Clemente NSSA Explorer Comp

porter-hogan

A recap of last weekend’s NSSA Explorer Contest in Porter’s own words:

“The event was at San Clemente Pier. When I first got there, the waves were about two feet and breaking right on the sand. I thought to myself this would be a hard one. I ended up getting a couple shore breakers and advanced through the heat. For some reason the waves just kept getting better and better with the increasing swell and lower tide. After many heats I found myself in the final. My goal the entire week was to get first in this NSSA contest. I knew I could do it and was ready for the final. I watched patiently and realized that there was a sandbar towards the middle of the break. In the final I sat right on it. I surfed my best and got two 7’s. I ended up getting second, but was proud of my result.”

Jamie Sterling Video from Waimea

Jamie Sterling has had a tough season. Early in a year that should have been his to claim, he succumbed to a brutal wipeout at Waimea as well as dislocating his shoulder just before the Eddie Aikau which shut the door on his chances this time around.

The video of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing produced by WindowSeat Pictures was taken right before Jamie was hurt. Jamie Sterling wears Jetty Matte Black G12.

Matt Meola Lands in the New York Times

matt-meola

Matt Meola and his reputation as a game changer has got him included in the New York Times article, Surfing’s Next Generation Takes to the Air

“That’s the future of surfing,” said Kelly Slater, 38, a nine-time world champion from Cocoa Beach, Fla. “It’s really in the air. The deepest barrels that are ever going to be ridden have already happened. Probably the best carving that’s ever going to be done is being done now or it’s been done.” For most of its history, competitive surfing rewarded long rides. Waves milked to shore with a series of turns often garnered high scores. And the most radical maneuver was being barreled, or slipping behind the veil of a breaking wave and emerging before it crashed on one’s head. Leaving the wave created controversy, leading the competitive surfing establishment to suppress aerials for decades.

Epic Surf

SURF – HAWAII

As a huge storm began producing 60 knot winds and growing seas of 50+ feet in the northern Pacific, everyone in the surf world started getting excited. With the possibility of the legendary big wave invitational Eddie Aikau on Oahu happening for the first time in 7 years, and Pe’ahi or Jaws breaking as well over on Maui, big wave surfers were gearing up. Several of Kaenon’s team were over in Hawaii early, training and preparing for what was to come. Big Wave Surfer, Jamie Sterling was seated in the Eddie but during a smaller swell the week before he went down hard on a 18 foot wave and blew out his shoulder destroying his chances for this years Eddie. As for guys like Jamie Mitchell and Zack Howard, they were on Maui getting ready for Jaws or Pe’ahi.

The morning of the big swell, the crew on Maui motored on Jet skis out to the break, which produced surf in the 40 to 50 foot range. Zack Howard who wears Burny Black, G12 lens picked off a bomb and surfed it beautifully. Nice work Zack! These guys travel the world looking for the biggest surf and will fly anywhere at a moment’s notice to get a chance to ride the biggest and best waves.

Check out this video of Zack’s wave of his life:
