Matt Meola – The New Age of Surfing

SURF
Matt Meola is the new age of surfing. Huge airs and some of the most progressive moves you will have ever witnessed to date. He will change the way you look at surfing, forever. Matt is excited to do more filming and travel in the future and eventually his own movie. For big wave action, he loves surfing Jaws where he knows the crew and can get waves but he really isn’t interested in tackling other big wave spots at this time. You can check Matt out live at the upcoming Volcom VQS Championships in Newport Beach this May. Matt Meola wears Burny Black G12.

Epic Surf

SURF – HAWAII

As a huge storm began producing 60 knot winds and growing seas of 50+ feet in the northern Pacific, everyone in the surf world started getting excited. With the possibility of the legendary big wave invitational Eddie Aikau on Oahu happening for the first time in 7 years, and Pe’ahi or Jaws breaking as well over on Maui, big wave surfers were gearing up. Several of Kaenon’s team were over in Hawaii early, training and preparing for what was to come. Big Wave Surfer, Jamie Sterling was seated in the Eddie but during a smaller swell the week before he went down hard on a 18 foot wave and blew out his shoulder destroying his chances for this years Eddie. As for guys like Jamie Mitchell and Zack Howard, they were on Maui getting ready for Jaws or Pe’ahi.

The morning of the big swell, the crew on Maui motored on Jet skis out to the break, which produced surf in the 40 to 50 foot range. Zack Howard who wears Burny Black, G12 lens picked off a bomb and surfed it beautifully. Nice work Zack! These guys travel the world looking for the biggest surf and will fly anywhere at a moment’s notice to get a chance to ride the biggest and best waves.

Check out this video of Zack’s wave of his life:

Dane Gudauskas Battles it Out at the Triple Crown

SURF

dane-gudauskas-triple-crown

At Sunset Beach Hawaii, in the Oahu Triple Crown of Surfing, Dane Gudauskas advanced through the first round of 128 with a win against the best of the best, including Corey Lopez.  In the round of 96 Dane advanced again in rough conditions with 2nd.  Finally in the round of 64 the surf jumped up huge with tough conditions but Dane held on and advanced again.  In the round of 32 Dane was competing against both of his bothers, Tanner and Patrick Gudauskas as well as Mason Ho.  The surf was in the 15- to 20-foot range and not always lining up.  Unfortunately Dane along with his brother Patrick went down.

Kaenon is thrilled with how well Dane surfed, making it all the way up to round 32 surfing against the best in some of the world’s heaviest surf. Watch for Dane to keep it up on the 2010 WQS!

Dane wears Burny Black G12.

Check out this cool article on Dane and his brothers, courtesy of the Orange County Register.

Secret Surf Safari

SURF
surf-trip-01

Kaenon Polarized and the crew from Transworld Surf took a special excursion to a secret spot off the West Coast to find an undisclosed set of breaks.

surf-trip-07

“With a pending swell and offshore winds in the forecast, we loaded up and headed south. We made it to the break at night and dropped the hook in about 30 feet of water. The boys were crying about sharks and having to paddle to the peak. I kept laughing at them and told them to man up.  But the laugh was on me by the end of the trip as a seal crawled up the beach with a huge bite mark out of its tail, ” said Wyms.

“After that, I started anchoring the boat a lot closer to the break from then on out.”

Nelscott Reef Big Wave Surf Contest

Nelscott Reef Big Wave Surf Event – Oregon Coast

This big wave surf event was a combination of tow-in surf with jet ski assist, and paddle-in surf contest. Waves were breaking on average 20 – 30 feet with some larger sets. Big wave riders, Jamie Mitchell and Jamie Sterling head to the raw and rugged Oregon coast for the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Contest. Jamie Mitchell wears Gauge Abalone G12 and Jamie Sterling wears Arlo Matte Black G12.

Raw beauty is the only way to describe the locale for this surf event.

Below is the wave they call “Yeti.” Here one of the locals checks it out from the shoulder of this crazy slab.

Jamie Mitchell flew into SFO after a long brutal flight from Sydney Australia. He was met by his tow partner and big wave charger Peter Mel. They had everything dialed and ready for the 12 hour drive up to Oregon’s Nelscott Reef in Lincoln City.

They arrived the day before the event and took the ski out that day to test everything. The ski, boards and team worked like clock work. Everything ran smooth. With Jamie finishing 2nd last year they felt they had a solid chance with the tow in and paddle in team event. Unfortunately Jamie Mitchell and his tow partner Peter Mel, broke down after their first heat. This killed their chances of advancement in the competition. Unlike most big waves surf spots, this wave is a mile off shore and you have to get through 15 – 20 foot shore pound.

surf-gearing-up-nelscott-reef

On the other side of the world, Jamie Sterling flew in from China after surfing a bore tide wave that travels miles and miles up a river in the heartland of China. The Chinese put on a huge celebration for the wave as top notch surfers, like Jamie Sterling surf the wave for miles. They are exclusively invited by the Chinese government to take part in the festivities.

jamie-sterling-kaenon

Sterling flew back home to Hawaii form China to pick up the necessary boards and suits and fly into Oregon the night before the event.

The day of the event everything went off as planned. The surf was ranging between 20 – 30 feet with some larger sets. Jamie Mitchell surfed a solid heat with some great scores. At the end of the heat the jet ski began to have problems and died. They were approximately 1 mile off shore through treacherous 15 foot shore pound.

With some help and a good opening they made it from the reef and through the shore pound unscathed. Unfortunately it crushed their chances of advancing.

For Jamie Sterling things did not go much better. Although he caught great waves and surfed them exceptionally the Judged failed to notice. It could have been for the fact that they were sitting on a deck, 200 feet above the ocean almost a mile from the action. It is hard to say.

For the life of a big wave charger, things are not always easy. If you are accepted into the event, then you have to endure the waiting period, which can range for 3 to 4 months. If the waves get big enough for the event which in many times they do not (look at the history of Eddie Aikau). Then the competitor has to be at the event in a moment’s notice no matter where they are in the world. On top of all of this, their body and equipment must be in perfect order. If not then the worst can happen.

The Jamie Mitchell Experience

EVENTS
jamie-experience

Just days before the 2009 Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, Kaenon Polarized teamed up with the Patagonia store in Cardiff, California to host legendary waterman and Kaenon athlete, Jamie Mitchell. As the sun set upon the Pacific Ocean gracing the store with rays of yellow, pink and orange, attendees began to filter though and settle in for an up close and personal experience with none other than Jamie Mitchell.

jamie-interview
Jamie Mitchell Interview
Interview by Emily of West Coast Divas of Jamie Mitchell during the Jamie Mitchell Experience.
Humbly retelling his memories, as the audience listened in amazement as the vast diversity of Jamie’s adventures and athletic skills unfolded, slide by slide. Guests were privileged to see video clips of this ultimate waterman plunge down 40+ foot waves across the world from his secret spot in Australia to legendary breaks like Mavericks, Todos Santos, Waimea and other more pristine locations such as Alaska and Shipsterns Bluff, Tasmania. Sharing his memories, (the good, the bad and the ugly), Jamie and guests shared laughs and winced in unison while watching footage of some epic wipe outs and impressive footage of super clean sessions.

jamie-blog-paddling
And while Jamie can certainly handle his own in the world of big wave surfing, his forte and passion lies within the world of paddleboarding. Coming off his incredible eighth consecutive win in the most prestigious paddleboarding race in the world, Jamie discussed his training regimen as well as the physical and mental strength that is needed to endure and dominate in a race of this magnitude.

When Jamie is not traveling the world in search of big waves or crossing miles of giant seas with nothing more than the tools of the trade, strength and his own endurance, he embraces the ocean and its inhabitants in all forms. From free diving with sting rays to paddleboarding with humpback whales, The Jamie Mitchell Experience goes well beyond one evening of storytelling, it is one of a true waterman to the core.

Porter Hogan Rocks Local Circuit

SURF
PORTER HOGAN TAKES HOME TWO AT NEWPORT SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS
porter-hogan-blog
“The event was held at 56th St. Newport Beach, California (straight out to the beach from Kaenon HQ). The waves were pumping. They were about 4 to 6 feet. I had a lot of stiff competition and knew it would not be an easy contest. I was competing in the High school division (18 and Under) as well as Men’s division (all ages). After about 6 or 7 different heats I found myself in the finals next to Newport’s top surfers. Somehow I managed to get a couple good waves under my belt and came out with the results of 2nd in the high school division and 2nd in the men’s division. Overall I was stoked about my result and hope to come back next year with the win.” Porter Hogan (Gauge Black G12)

NSSA EXPLORER HUNTINGTON BEACH – PORTER HOGAN TAKES 3RD
“The event was held at Golden West St. in Huntington Beach, California. The waves were going off at about 5 feet. The NSSA is the toughest surf series in California and I was hoping to start the year out strong in the Men’s Division. After about five heats that day I found myself in the finals. I surfed a solid heat and ended up getting 3rd in the finals. Overall I was stoked with my result and hope it bumps me up in the rankings.”
