Matt Meola is the new age of surfing. Huge airs and some of the most progressive moves you will have ever witnessed to date. He will change the way you look at surfing, forever. Matt is excited to do more filming and travel in the future and eventually his own movie. For big wave action, he loves surfing Jaws where he knows the crew and can get waves but he really isn’t interested in tackling other big wave spots at this time. Last Saturday night, Sublime with lead singer Rome took the stage at 8:00pm at the 20th KROQ Acoustic Christmas concert as a surprise guest.  No introduction.  Just 30 minutes of Sublime’s past hits along with a new song sprinkled in for good measure.  The band includes 2 of the 3 founding Sublime members along with new lead singer Rome Ramirez (Arlo Matte Black Rx clear lens) and Todd Forman on horns and keyboards (Burnet Havana Rx clear lens).  KROQ’s blog may have summed it up best:  8:19 PM: Never thought you’d see the day Sublime would take the stage again?  We never lost faith.  “Love’s what I got, Don’t start a riot, you’ll feel it when the dance gets hot… We’re burnin up in here.”

SURF – HAWAII

As a huge storm began producing 60 knot winds and growing seas of 50+ feet in the northern Pacific, everyone in the surf world started getting excited. With the possibility of the legendary big wave invitational Eddie Aikau on Oahu happening for the first time in 7 years, and Pe’ahi or Jaws breaking as well over on Maui, big wave surfers were gearing up. Several of Kaenon’s team were over in Hawaii early, training and preparing for what was to come. Big Wave Surfer, Jamie Sterling was seated in the Eddie but during a smaller swell the week before he went down hard on a 18 foot wave and blew out his shoulder destroying his chances for this years Eddie. As for guys like Jamie Mitchell and Zack Howard, they were on Maui getting ready for Jaws or Pe’ahi.

The morning of the big swell, the crew on Maui motored on Jet skis out to the break, which produced surf in the 40 to 50 foot range. Zack Howard who wears Burny Black, G12 lens picked off a bomb and surfed it beautifully. Nice work Zack! These guys travel the world looking for the biggest surf and will fly anywhere at a moment’s notice to get a chance to ride the biggest and best waves.

October 5, 2009: The GSM/Wabsono team returns to the Qiantang River “Silver Dragon” Tidal Bore in Hangzhou, China with Rusty Long and Jamie Sterling!

This is the first episode of daily updates that include the 1st Annual Surfing China Festival in Hangzhou’s brand new CBD district on the riverfront.

Industry brands plant their flag… and the festival site includes a skatepark, an SUP pool, fashion shows, a beer garden, live music, and a film festival. Hundreds of thousands are expected to visit the site during the Chinese holiday!

MUSIC/ENTERTAINMENT

Sublime (re)introduced themselves to the public on Saturday, Oct 24, in front of more than 15,000 at the Smokeout Festival in Southern California. The 2 remaining founding members, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, reunited during the festival with new lead singer, 22-yr old Rome Ramirez, supported on horns and keyboards by Todd Forman where they performed together live under the Sublime moniker for the first time in 13 years. While controversy stirs and legal proceedings press on, the crowd loved it, singing along to their favorite Sublime hits. Not allowing the band to quietly exit after their set was done, the crowd demanded an encore, and they did not disappoint!

Drummer, Bud Gaugh, took his place on stage wearing Gauge Black G12. Lead singer, Rome, lead the crowd through the Sublime set while wearing clear lenses in Beacon Black. Read the full article in Rolling Stone Magazine.

Trapper Rudd, wearing Hard Kore Black C12 and owner of Cutthroat Anglers, experienced off the charts snook fishing deep in the mangroves jungles of the Yucatan. Armed with a fly-rod, specialized fishing Kayak, and plenty of Skoal Wintergreen – Trapper hooks up to a HUGE snook.

Job Ishiki, a great longboarder from Kauai, Hi was caught on taught a couple weeks ago surfing in Southern California. Job wears Kaenon’s Burny Black G12.

CHILE STORM SURFING

Jamie Sterling goes to great lengths to surf the biggest waves around the world. He spent a couple months down in Chile waiting for the perfect storm. The surf prevailed but unfortunately, so did the winds. Check out Jamie’s endeavors and struggles in the videos below. Jamie has been keen on Arlo Matte Black G12 lately.

Umphrey’s McGee and Kaenon share a mutual love for great music and the outdoors. While in between tour dates, the band took advantage of their surroundings and made a stop at the Grand Canyon for a little rest and relaxation. In their own words, “It’s hard to believe that after almost 12 years of touring we have never managed to get ourselves to the Grand Canyon. Until yesterday. We were fortunate enough to get the bus fixed in time (yes, we had more travel difficulties) to make it to the giant hole with a few hours of day light to spare. The team headed to the Kaibab trail head and descended into the canyon for a few hours of hiking. Here is a little slideshow so you can join us on our glorious day off in the desert.”

Kaenon surfer, Jamie Sterling has spent the last several months surfing the world. In this video Jamie and friends capture the best of Mexico all using the HD Surf HERO from GoPro showcasing an entirely new take on the traditional surf movie. Jamie Sterling wears a variety of Kaenon’s men’s sunglasses with his go to styles for pre and post surf being Arlo, Calais, and Gauge.

To launch the HD Surf HERO camera, GoPro sent their boy Brad down to Mexico with rippers Jamie Sterling and friends. The result is a professional surf movie, albeit shot on the $269 HD Surf HERO, from GoPro. Buenos días, amigos…una más, por favor. Cómo? Exactly.

PADDLE
Jamie Mitchell has the world buzzing again, but this time it’s due to his amazing run in with a pod of humpback whales. Eight time world paddleboarding champion Jamie Mitchell told news.com.au he was out filming a pilot for his coming documentary, Living in Liquid, when a pod of up to five humpbacks surfaced, and started following him off Tweed Heads at about 7.30am (AEST).

Get the story straight from Jamie….”How do I start… Well I pretty much had one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in the ocean yesterday… I was out doing some filming off the Gold Coast/Tweed Border paddling on my Stand Up when a pod of whales decided to come play with me… I won’t say too much but lets just say it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’ll remember it till the day I die.”

“We were just out on the water paddling around and all of a sudden, boom, a whale breached about 100m away from me,” Mitchell said. “I thought that was pretty cool and then all of a sudden another whale came up right in front of me. “At the start it was sort of scary, I got goosebumps and the adrenalin started flowing.

“But then I realized that they were just playing. They swam right underneath my board and I thought I’d be in strife if they came up but they had a good sense of where I was.” Read the full story and see more pictures here.
