Surf Groms Update
From Lakey, “I just got back from an amazing two-month trip through New Zealand and Australia! I started out in NZ where I did the ISA world junior championships. Basically every country from around the world that has a surf team take what they think is the best four girls and eight boys to represent their country. I had a great time and felt like I surfed really well. I ended up getting fourth in that event so I was stoked… fourth in the world for me isn’t too bad!”
Lakey Peterson wears Burny Tortoise G12.
Lucas Angulo, who wears Bolsa, made it to both Finals in his divisions (Open Boys and Explorer Menehune), ending up with a 6th in Open Boys and a 2nd in Explorer Menehune. Heis now ranked 3rd in the Hawaii Region in Explorer Menehune and 4th in the region in Open Boys, and has qualified for Nationals in Open Boys, Explorer Menehune, Open Juniors and Explorer Boys. Lucas surfed in nine heats over the three-day event and made it to the Finals in his two main divisions. He also made it through a couple of heats in the older boys divisions, securing his place in those two divisions as well for Nationals.
The latest from Porter: “My last event was held at the South Side of the Huntington Pier. I was happy to be competing in the S.A.L.S.A Surfing event because it was a charity contest for Lou Gehrigs disease and I was proud to show my support. I was competing in the combined mens and pro division. The waves were good and I was ready for an eventful day. After about 4 heats of solid surfing I found myself in the finals. With the tide shifting to high I knew that it would be a difficult final. I ended up getting some fun waves and finished 2nd.”
Porter Hogan wears Gauge Black G12.

Matt Meola Lands in the New York Times

Matt Meola and his reputation as a game changer has got him included in the New York Times article, Surfing’s Next Generation Takes to the Air
“That’s the future of surfing,” said Kelly Slater, 38, a nine-time world champion from Cocoa Beach, Fla. “It’s really in the air. The deepest barrels that are ever going to be ridden have already happened. Probably the best carving that’s ever going to be done is being done now or it’s been done.” For most of its history, competitive surfing rewarded long rides. Waves milked to shore with a series of turns often garnered high scores. And the most radical maneuver was being barreled, or slipping behind the veil of a breaking wave and emerging before it crashed on one’s head. Leaving the wave created controversy, leading the competitive surfing establishment to suppress aerials for decades.

Fast Lane, SUPs, Sharks, Oh My…!
We just caught wind of these ridiculous images of our friend Jared Lane from Fast Lane Sailing Center down in San Diego. Wearing Kaenon Polarized Sunglasses style, Burny Black G12, Jared caught a 100 lb thresher shark from a stand up paddleboard, actually pulling the shark up in his lap. Yep, you read that right.

Just another day in sunny Southern California…?
“There was some talk about fishing on a stand up paddle board going around our shop, and the idea to tow surf behind a shark came up. Is it possible? I thought it would be more than possible and was so confident I set the whole attack mission up. I had the whole thing planned out except for one minor detail… What do I do when it’s right beneath my feet?” – Jared Lane

Dane Gudauskas Battles it Out at the Triple Crown
SURF

At Sunset Beach Hawaii, in the Oahu Triple Crown of Surfing, Dane Gudauskas advanced through the first round of 128 with a win against the best of the best, including Corey Lopez. In the round of 96 Dane advanced again in rough conditions with 2nd. Finally in the round of 64 the surf jumped up huge with tough conditions but Dane held on and advanced again. In the round of 32 Dane was competing against both of his bothers, Tanner and Patrick Gudauskas as well as Mason Ho. The surf was in the 15- to 20-foot range and not always lining up. Unfortunately Dane along with his brother Patrick went down.
Kaenon is thrilled with how well Dane surfed, making it all the way up to round 32 surfing against the best in some of the world’s heaviest surf. Watch for Dane to keep it up on the 2010 WQS!

Los Cabos BillFish Tournament
OFFSHORE – LOS CABOS BILLFISH TOURNAMENT – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Following the shotgun start of the first fishing day of the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, the 60’ BCE Bandit, fresh from its strong finish at Catalina tournaments last month, raced ahead of the fleet to the Gordo Bank where they were able to get baited up in just a couple minutes. Just as they began trolling the baits a big black picked one up and they were on. Anthony Hsieh was on the rod, and had the fish boat-side in about 5 minutes. After a tough 15 minute battle on the gaff, the 451# black was boated – the only qualifying fish weighed on day one.

Captain Tommy, Corey, Anthony (Arlo Tortoise G12), Kevin Nakamaru (Kabin Tortoise G12) and the rest of the BANDIT Team.
Day two turned out to be groundhog day for the BANDIT boys – boating a second slightly larger black and winning both days’ jackpots to take home a whopping $420,875 for their efforts. Not a bad couple days’ work.
A very stoked Anthony Hsieh with a second $200,000 black marlin in the boat. When you’re hot you’re hot.

Meanwhile team Karma, with Angler Steve Spina, and Kona Captains Kerwin Masunaga, Boyd de Coito (UPD Black G12), Shane O’Brien (Arlo Matte Black G12) and Russ Armstrong showed up at the scales with an absolutely massive 363# yellowfin tuna.
Fishing aboard TENACIOUS, Captain Gene Vanderhoek (Rhino Black G12), Sam Choy Jr. (Rhino Matte black G12 RX), Chris Choy (Lewi Black G12), Ron Tegland Jr. (Burny Black G12) and Ron Tegland Sr. (Porter Tortoise C12) finished second in the billfish release division with 3 striped marlin released.

Brothers Chris Choy (Lewi Black G12) and Sam Choy Jr. (Rhino Matte black RX) prepare to release a striped marlin aboard TENACIOUS.

Istanbul Europa Race – Leg 2
SAILING – BARCELONA, SPAIN / NICE, FRANCE

Barcelona, September 10, 2009 – Estrella Damm Sailing Team has arrived home to Barcelona. The Spanish boat crossed the finish line at 8:34 am outside the city in third place behind Groupe Bel and Foncia, after sailing the 410 miles of the second leg of the Istanbul Europa Race from Nice to Barcelona. The result means Guillermo Altadill wearing Rhino and Pachi Rivero’s team remains at the top of the overall leader board with clear options for victory in Brest (France) the final port of call of the round Europe yacht race.
Excitement was high with the results today, with three boats finishing and drawing equal on ten points: Estrella Damm who add their victory in Nice to the third place in Barcelona, Michel Desjoyeaux’s Foncia with two seconds, and Kito de Pavant’s Groupe Bel with a third victory in Barcelona.
The Spanish boat remains at the head of the overall race classification as the boat with the fastest time over the two legs: 9 days, 13 hours, 37 minutes and 6 seconds; 19 minutes faster than Foncia and 27 faster than Groupe Bel.
With such close results the days remaining until the departure of the fleet from Barcelona to Brest on Monday 14th September will be tense with excitement. The teams are all fully aware that except for some kind of unforeseeable event, the first boat to arrive in Brest will take the trophy,
“In the next leg, the first boat to arrive will win the whole race, so it will be a lot more exciting,” said Barcelona-born skipper Guillermo Altadill.
The final leg of the Europa Race started Monday,September 14 in Barcelona, Spain – Brest, France. The winner of this final leg will be the regatta winner.
As of 10:00 am CET September 15, Estrella Damm sits second. After leaving Barcelona the fleet faced a sudden storm of lightening and heavy rainfall.

IndyCar Series Suntrust Indy Challenge
AUTO RACING – Richmond, VA
Switching it up and running BURNY Tortoise G12 this weekend, Danica Patrick Started 10th, finished 5th as she continued her solid driving and consistent finishes this year despite some serious early week confrontations and accusations from the Andretti Green Racing Team drivers (AGR), including Danica, that the team is not fielding fast cars and having “set-up” issues in the garage and with team engineers. The oval night race didn’t provide for a lot of passing, but leaves Danica well positioned in the overall points race for the Series Championship – as rumours continued to swirl about what racing series she might drive – her star continues to rise in this “contract” year.

Driver: Danica Patrick
Car: #7 Boost Mobile/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
“I’m really glad we were able to make another top-five finish for the Boost Mobile/Motorola car. We struggled with qualifying yesterday, but we worked really hard to figure out what we needed to do to have a good outcome. The guys did a really great job in the pits, the car felt good all night. I wish we were able to race up front with the leaders but we got caught in lapped traffic. Overall a great way to way to end a challenging weekend for Andretti Green.”

Lakey Peterson Continues to Dominate
SURF – SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Lakey Peterson Wins!
National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – Trestles, San Clemente, California

Lakey Peterson did it! She won the NSSA National Open Women’s Championship. Although she competed in several divisions and walked away with a second in the Explorer Girls, winning the Open Women’s had the most prestige. Lakey set the tone by scoring a 9.0 wave, where she completed a solid air. This maneuver had the fans on the beach and over the internet in a frenzy.
At age 14 Lakey is one of the youngest females to win this Division, which makes her the Women’s Jr National Champion. The competitors in this contest are the very best, many of whom are several years older than Lakey and come from all over the United States, including Hawaii. NSSA Nationals is the largest and most prestigious amateur competition in the U.S for surfers 18 and under. Lakey wears Burny Black G12.

The event was packed with spectators on Saturday. Lakey’s Coach Mike Lamm wearing Jetty Matte Black G12
Kaenon Team rider Chandler Parr surfed solid all the way to the Semi Finals where she just missed one of the set waves and finished the heat in 3rd and unfortunately did not advance to the final – but a spectacular finish nonetheless. Chandler wears Calais Tortoise C12.

Jesse Gugliemana, a new Kaenon Grom from Kauai, wearing Gauge. Kristy Gugliemana, Jesse’s mom is a big fan of Leila. Jesse just made the Quiksilver team and surfed solid through several rounds in the Open Juniors.

Danica Patrick’s Indy 500 Podium Finish
AUTO RACING – INDY 500 – Indianapolis, IN
Danica Patrick, wearing Kaenon Polarized Sunglasses in the yet to be released BURNET™, started 10th and finished 3rd – locking in a career-best Indy 500 performance. With her first podium finish at the brickyard, Danica rounded out a much hype filled month of May with a respectable 3rd place! She continues to build on her celebrity (countless commercial time was filled with Danica ads promoting several products), while confirming her unmistakable driving ability with the big boys on the track at over 200mph. In addition to Danica’s racing abilities, she has a great sense of style and fashion. As a long time supporter of Kaenon Polarized, her design and fashion wisdom has inspired our designers on several color treatments and products, including the stylish Calais model and the new Tobacco Denim color in the popular Georgia. In working with her on the lens’ performance as well as frame performance and styling, she has been a part of Kaenon’s design and engineering process every step of the way. Danica alternates between her favorites and can be seen wearing CALAIS, GEORGIA, BURNY, EDEN, and KABIN accessorizing depending on activity, style and preference.

Ryan Briscoe starting on the front row led briefly and had a strong run till a strange, bad set of tires caused him to lose traction and valuable speed, having to pit to fix the problem with a new set of Firestones. He was never a factor after that.
Next up is the Milwaukee Mile, televised live this Sunday, again on ABC.
