Umphrey’s In The Canyon
VIDEO
Umphrey’s McGee and Kaenon share a mutual love for great music and the outdoors. While in between tour dates, the band took advantage of their surroundings and made a stop at the Grand Canyon for a little rest and relaxation. In their own words, “It’s hard to believe that after almost 12 years of touring we have never managed to get ourselves to the Grand Canyon. Until yesterday. We were fortunate enough to get the bus fixed in time (yes, we had more travel difficulties) to make it to the giant hole with a few hours of day light to spare. The team headed to the Kaibab trail head and descended into the canyon for a few hours of hiking. Here is a little slideshow so you can join us on our glorious day off in the desert.”

Jetty Review – Gear Guide
REVIEWS
Posted in Gear.com, Gear Reviews, Sunglasses by Jason Mitchell

“I’m a sunglasses junkie and have been drawn to the performance of Kaenon sunglasses of late. Having flogged the Kaenon Kore sunglasses for over a year and subsequently wearing the Kaenon Jetty sunglasses now for about 6 months, I’m sold on the lens technology and the function of these killer optics.
From Kaenon, here’s the skinny on the Jetty:
JETTY™ is an oversize, tall and boxy performance frame with plenty of street attitude which embodies the company’s Luxury Performance™ design and engineering mantra. A unisex frame that can be worn by men and women everyday, JETTY is also built to perform for the active lifestyle.
This style features tall temples and a rectangular face shape with clean and smooth surface design; plus functional details such as recessed Variflex™ rubber nose pads for secure fit and heavy duty, non-corrosive, five-barrel stainless steel hinges for added comfort and durability. JETTY is finished with the polished Kaenon jewel icon that marks the authenticity of a Kaenon Polarized original design. JETTY comes with a protective metal case.
Kaenon Jetty Sunglasses Review
While the Kore’s are built for athletic performance (cycling, skiing, running, etc.), the Jetty’s are built with style and performance in mind. So, you do give up some of the pure performance features in favor of a little more street or beach style.
By no means do you give up anything when it comes to the lenses as the polarized SR-91 lenses offer crystal clear optics and durability not found on other non-glass lenses on the market. Another note about the polarization technology used by Kaenon… I’ve worn these side-by-side with other polarized lenses and the difference is dramatic. With some of the others I got rainbow artifacts while mountain biking–not so with these.
While I really appreciate the clarity of the optics, the Jetty does have its limits when pushed hard, but they still performed surprisingly well. I wore them on several mountain bike rides and even on a few long-distance trail runs just to see how well they’d work. Surprisingly, they stayed put and were quite comfortable–even when I was sweating buckets.
For true athletic activity, I’d prefer the Kore, but these are amazingly-versatile while still being super-stylish. I always love to share my Kaenon’s with others when at the river or the lake to show them just how effective polarization is at cutting down glare. I’m a believer.”
Model Tested: Black with G12 Lens, MSRP $208.95
The Good
* Top-notch polarization
* Scratch-free performance
* Stylish design around town and on the trail
* Feels very comfortable
* Rubber nose pads keep them in place
The Bad
* Wide frame design doesn’t sit well on top of the head (flush carefully!)
* No rubberized earpieces

Chilean Surf by Jamie Sterling
A great update from Jamie Sterling on one of his many recent adventures. Read his blog posting to find out about his leg burning rides in Southern Chile. Jamie wears Arlo, Gauge, Calais and Jetty.

July 15, 2009
It’s been a month spent in Chile. We arrived June 18 and will be departing back to CA on July 17. We surfed various spots in the South from being fogged in at Matanza to carving it up at Buchipureo’s forgiving long left point.
I had one day of giant surf or semi big surf. Punta De Lobos in Pichilemu got as big as 15 Ft one evening. Too bad the conditions were so haggard from a strong 30 knot north wind. We went out to Punta De Lobos for a gander. It was super bumpy and challenging. I caught some super scary rides and was going so fast over the choppy surf. Mark Visser flew over from Aus to surf with me. Hats off to him for his effort. One of these days we will score together. It was another great Chinese fire drill and more training for the two of us.

At the moment I have that surf stoked/surf out feeling going. It will probably be 2 weeks before I surf any kind of real waves again. We had been staying in Mando’s cabin in Buchipureo for a week, but now we are staying at his apartment in Santiago. It’s awesome hanging out with Mando! He’s a super mellow older guy who surfs with a goofy-foot smooth style. He has traveled all over Chile surfing and is probably one of the most knowledgeable surfers in the country. As well as the coolest!
This trip has been great in learning about all the different point breaks in the South. It was my first time traveling in the South. I have a better understanding of the waves in Chile as a whole. I have previously been to Northern Chile 3 times before this trip, but I prefer Southern Chile. Its much more beautiful and quiet. The South of Chile is old world to the fullest still! The local fishermen still use two huge Ox to pull their authentic Chilean boats up the beach. It’s their equivalent two a modern quad motorcycle. You can find a variety of waves south of Santiago. I often surfed with no more then 5 guys out, sometimes by myself. The waves I rode were the longest leg burning rides of my life.
Next on my plate is getting my 15 Ft. enclosed trailer packed and ready to ship to Puerto Escondido. Ill be shipping my ski along with some of Balti’s things down to Puerto to permanently live there. I’ll be flying down to Puerto for a 2 month stay. Super excited! Plenty of warm water barrels await me and Ariel. Ariel will continue to document my surf sessions and create webisodes as well as collect footage to one day create a movie on my surf exploits.

July 18 ‘09 9 am mid flight from Dallas, Texas to LAX…
Small change in plans since I last wrote the previous blog. Upon departing from Chile yesterday, Rusty Long and I were monitoring a serious 19 second interval swell to hit Puerto Escondio on Fri July 24. After closely reviewing all our reliable weather forecasting sites we both booked tickets to fly down to Puerto Escondido on Tues July 21. It’s on!! Swell, period, and winds look perfect. For me it’s going to be a strike mission. I’ll fly down with Rusty and Ariel on Tues July 21 and fly back Fri afternoon July 24. Why so short? I have to be in Huntington Beach for the US open to sign Autographs for Invisalyn. It will all be worth it!! I forgot to mention as I write this I’m on my final flight segment from Chile via Texas to L.A.
Time to store the winter clothes, 4×3 wetsuits, booties,and bust out the board shorts. It’s going to feel awesome to warm up in Mexico after a month of chilly weather in Chile!

Stay tuned for the Puerto Escondido update!
Aloha,
Sterls

America’s Cup – It’s On!
SAILING
The Oldest Trophy in Sport, The America’s Cup will be a one-off match race (one-on-one) between the defender Alinghi from Switzerland (skippered by our Kaenon’s Brad Butterworth) and the American Challenger, BMW Oracle (skipper and CEO, Russell Coutts and owned by Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison), in Giant Multihulls. The race is expected to take place in February and the location will be announced August 8 by the defender.
These boats are insane – gigantic multihulls that have never been designed or built of this size that will reach unheard of speeds on the course. If you’re a sailor – and even if you’re not, the America’s Cup will be a spectacle. The world-wide exposure from this event will likely be unprecedented for many reasons.
Below, BMW Oracle’s 90-foot x 90-foot Trimaran training off San Diego last week in very mild conditions.

Offshore Fishing – Poco Bueno Tournament
POCO BUENO TOURNAMENT- Port O’Conner, Texas
Captains Clay Hensley (Jetty Seaweed G12) and John Uhr (Basis Black G12) and crew aboard the 54’ Spencer Seay Goddess won the 2009 Poco Bueno fishing tournament last weekend with a 429# Blue Marlin. Because of the long distances (100+ nautical miles) crews must cover to get into deep water the fleet departs at midnight. The Seay Goddess crew powered out 220 miles before putting lines in at an offshore seamount that looked promising on satellite imagery. At 1:30pm the fish was boated and the crew powered back to Port O’Conner for the weigh in- their fish turned out to be the right one- winning the team bragging rights and a cool $550,000 paycheck.

Surf by Wyms – Lakey Continues to Dominate
SURF – SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Lakey Peterson Wins!
National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – Trestles, San Clemente, California

Lakey Peterson did it! She won the NSSA National Open Women’s Championship. Although she competed in several divisions and walked away with a second in the Explorer Girls, winning the Open Women’s had the most prestige. Lakey set the tone by scoring a 9.0 wave, where she completed a solid air. This maneuver had the fans on the beach and over the internet in a frenzy.
At age 14 Lakey is one of the youngest females to win this Division, which makes her the Women’s Jr National Champion. The competitors in this contest are the very best, many of whom are several years older than Lakey and come from all over the United States, including Hawaii. NSSA Nationals is the largest and most prestigious amateur competition in the U.S for surfers 18 and under. Lakey wears Burny Black G12.

The event was packed with spectators on Saturday. Lakey’s Coach Mike Lamm wearing Jetty Matte Black G12
Kaenon Team rider Chandler Parr surfed solid all the way to the Semi Finals where she just missed one of the set waves and finished the heat in 3rd and unfortunately did not advance to the final – but a spectacular finish nonetheless. Chandler wears Calais Tortoise C12.

Jesse Gugliemana, a new Kaenon Grom from Kauai, wearing Gauge. Kristy Gugliemana, Jesse’s mom is a big fan of Leila. Jesse just made the Quiksilver team and surfed solid through several rounds in the Open Juniors.

Some more familiar faces of Kaenon at the event:
Dane Gudauskas (Burny Black G12), WQS Surf, Elliot Leboe (Jetty Black G12), Kiteboarder and filmmaker, Theo Niarchos (Gauge Black G12), Surfer form Maui

Shea Lopez – Daytona Surf Camp
SURF – PANAMA & FLORIDA

Shea Lopez has a surf camp that just started in Daytona Beach.
“No longer facing the tour’s chaotic globetrotting, this 35-year-old is looking to make surfing a better place. And he’s starting at home.
“I’ve lived here for 10, 11 years, but for the first seven I was gone 250 days a year. I didn’t really get to leave an impression with the kids,” Lopez said.
Now Lopez has a 3½-year-old daughter catching her first waves, and he wants to teach others in the next generation of local surfers the things that have given his family a lifelong love of the sport”…read the full article by Jordan Kahn.
Shea just finished a trip to Nicaragua and Panama, with some great exposure and with a bit of fishing on the side. Check out these shots of Shea on Transworld
