Jamie Sterling Lends a Hand to Save the Wave

jamie-sterling-jetty

Jamie is finally back. After a tough setback due to a shoulder injury earlier this year (see: Wipe Out at Waimea Bay),
Jamie Sterling (Jetty, Matte Black, G12 lens) came back in fine form, placing 4th in 15-18 foot surf in Chile’s Quiksilver Cermonial contest. He was down in Chile for multiple reasons, not solely to compete in the prestigious big wave event, but to give back to the community that has given him so much.

jamie-sterling-barrel

Pichilemu, Chile was hit really hard by the recent 8.8 earthquakes and tsunami in February. Jamie, together with Chilean surfers Ramón Navarro, Diego Medina, and Leo Acevedo, traveled to the badly damaged coastal city of Constitución with Save The Waves foundation coordinators to deliver food, clothing and other supplies to local school children and other relief organizations such as the Red Cross and Un Techo Para Chile, who are building temporary housing in many damaged areas.

jamie-sterling-sunglasses

Congrats Jamie for your comeback and for lending a hand to those in need.

Brian Gay Places Second at HP Byron Nelson PGA Event

brian-gay-golf-sunglasses

Brian Gay, wearing Jetty Matte Black G12 shot a stunning 7-under 63 in the final round to tie for 2nd, his best finish this year.

According to ESPN:
“Gay also continued to adjust and improve his game throughout the weekend before his 63 was Sunday’s best round by three shots.

“‘I’ve been working on a couple things this week, just a little bit with my path,’ Gay said. ‘I was close [earlier in the tournament], [they] were just not quite falling. But I made my share today.’

“The second-place finish was Gay’s best since his win in the St. Jude Classic in June 2009. As he left the course Sunday, he didn’t expect his 8-under finish to put him in contention for the win.”

Saltwater Bass Fishing in Palos Verdes, CA

Early season signs are pointing to a great upcoming El Niño-influenced summer of fishing. While White Sea Bass and Yellowtail are just starting to show up at the islands, the Calico Bass action is already in full swing. Local Salt Water Bass pros Ben Florentino and teammate Keith Michael of team “Big Hammer” reported,

“Great day on the water. The weather was nice to start in the 60’s, shorts and jacket, then the storm rolled in, but, it didn’t seem to bother fishing! We ended up with about 30 fish a piece!”

As the weather conditions deteriorated the fishing improved. Ben shows off a huge 8 pound calico caught in the rain.

yuri-hauswald-mtbike-sunglasses

Update from Yuri Hauswald on the weekends happenings in Prescott, Arizona:

“The Whiskey Off-Road race is put on by Epic Rides, one of Arizona’s premier event promoters. This amazing race take place in the high alpine town of Prescott, and saw over a thousand riders tackle the 15, 25, and 50 mile race loops. The Whiskey also attracts some of the Southwest’s fastest single speed riders, so I am stoked to report that I covered the 50-mile loop, with over 7,000 ft of climbing, in a time of 3:51, which earned me third place in the Single Speed Male Division.”

Yuri wears Jetty Matte Black G12 off the track and Hard Kore Black G12 while racing.

LPGA Debuts, As Does Kaenon’s Newest Metal Frame, The Sequence

The Women’s LPGA Tour made its 2010 American debut in Southern California at the La Costa Resort and Spa last week, as did Kaenon’s newest metal style from the 2010 collection, the Sequence™. LPGA star Morgan Pressel showcased the brand new Sequence Gold Grey12 in its first public showing, playing all four rounds wearing the new aviator-inspired metal frame. Proving that Sequence embodies true Luxury Performance™ right out of the box, Morgan Pressel finished sixth, starting off her season in style and validating the design and technical superiority of Kaenon Polarized eyewear.

Test-driving Sequence in the Pro-Am earlier in the week, Morgan automatically fell in love with the newest full-metal frame to compliment the Kaenon Polarized metals collection. She put it in play for Round 1, and subsequently wore Sequence all four days throughout the tournament.

Sophie Gustafson played in the new Jetty Havana C28, while Anna Rawson played in the new Leila Havana C12 and Nicole Hage in the relaunched Delite Black G12. All players underscored the fact that Kaenon Polarized offers genuine Luxury Performance in frame designs and lens tints to match every player’s personality, look and personal preference.

Porter Hogan Takes Second in San Clemente NSSA Explorer Comp

porter-hogan

A recap of last weekend’s NSSA Explorer Contest in Porter’s own words:

“The event was at San Clemente Pier. When I first got there, the waves were about two feet and breaking right on the sand. I thought to myself this would be a hard one. I ended up getting a couple shore breakers and advanced through the heat. For some reason the waves just kept getting better and better with the increasing swell and lower tide. After many heats I found myself in the final. My goal the entire week was to get first in this NSSA contest. I knew I could do it and was ready for the final. I watched patiently and realized that there was a sandbar towards the middle of the break. In the final I sat right on it. I surfed my best and got two 7’s. I ended up getting second, but was proud of my result.”

Epic Battle at Sea – 33rd America’s Cup is On! Race 1 Complete

If you’re having trouble seeing the photos below, view it online here.

EPIC BATTLE AT SEA – 33rd AMERICA’S CUP
Valencia, Spain

With rivalries abound and court room proceedings laid to rest, the 33rd America’s Cup is finally underway. Two giant multihulls operated by the world’s best sailors, are navigating at speeds in excess of 25 knots, representing the fastest sailing to have ever been seen in the history of the America’s Cup. The Defender – Alinghi and the Challenger – BMW Oracle Racing are fighting for the oldest trophy to be competed in international sports, period!

RACE 1 Kaenon Polarized was all over the unprecedented America’s Cup, featuring the most innovative and exciting sailboats ever built. BMW Oracle Racing tactician, John Kostecki, wearing Hard Kore, C12 lens put USA 17 in an excellent position at the start to draw a penalty on Alinghi. This move provided an immediate advantage to the American Challenger.

As the start gun fired, Alinghi 5, with tactician, Brad Butterworth also wearing Hard Kore, C12 lens, held a brief speed advantage, until Kostecki spotted a slot of stronger, favorable breeze that allowed BMW Oracle to climb above and move forward on Alinghi to wrestle the lead shortly after the start. After that, the Challenger’s Wing Sail – operated and trimmed by Dirk DeRidder, wearing Kore, G12 lens, and Joey Newton in Hard Kore, G12 lens – proved more efficient with BMW Oracle holding a 5% speed advantage upwind and an 11% advantage downwind, to claim huge time and distance victory in Race 1.

Umphrey’s In The Canyon

VIDEO
Umphrey’s McGee and Kaenon share a mutual love for great music and the outdoors. While in between tour dates, the band took advantage of their surroundings and made a stop at the Grand Canyon for a little rest and relaxation. In their own words, “It’s hard to believe that after almost 12 years of touring we have never managed to get ourselves to the Grand Canyon. Until yesterday. We were fortunate enough to get the bus fixed in time (yes, we had more travel difficulties) to make it to the giant hole with a few hours of day light to spare. The team headed to the Kaibab trail head and descended into the canyon for a few hours of hiking. Here is a little slideshow so you can join us on our glorious day off in the desert.”

Jetty Review – Gear Guide

REVIEWS
Posted in Gear.com, Gear Reviews, Sunglasses by Jason Mitchell

“I’m a sunglasses junkie and have been drawn to the performance of Kaenon sunglasses of late. Having flogged the Kaenon Kore sunglasses for over a year and subsequently wearing the Kaenon Jetty sunglasses now for about 6 months, I’m sold on the lens technology and the function of these killer optics.

From Kaenon, here’s the skinny on the Jetty:

JETTY™ is an oversize, tall and boxy performance frame with plenty of street attitude which embodies the company’s Luxury Performance™ design and engineering mantra. A unisex frame that can be worn by men and women everyday, JETTY is also built to perform for the active lifestyle.

This style features tall temples and a rectangular face shape with clean and smooth surface design; plus functional details such as recessed Variflex™ rubber nose pads for secure fit and heavy duty, non-corrosive, five-barrel stainless steel hinges for added comfort and durability. JETTY is finished with the polished Kaenon jewel icon that marks the authenticity of a Kaenon Polarized original design. JETTY comes with a protective metal case.

Kaenon Jetty Sunglasses Review

While the Kore’s are built for athletic performance (cycling, skiing, running, etc.), the Jetty’s are built with style and performance in mind. So, you do give up some of the pure performance features in favor of a little more street or beach style.

By no means do you give up anything when it comes to the lenses as the polarized SR-91 lenses offer crystal clear optics and durability not found on other non-glass lenses on the market. Another note about the polarization technology used by Kaenon… I’ve worn these side-by-side with other polarized lenses and the difference is dramatic. With some of the others I got rainbow artifacts while mountain biking–not so with these.

While I really appreciate the clarity of the optics, the Jetty does have its limits when pushed hard, but they still performed surprisingly well. I wore them on several mountain bike rides and even on a few long-distance trail runs just to see how well they’d work. Surprisingly, they stayed put and were quite comfortable–even when I was sweating buckets.

For true athletic activity, I’d prefer the Kore, but these are amazingly-versatile while still being super-stylish. I always love to share my Kaenon’s with others when at the river or the lake to show them just how effective polarization is at cutting down glare. I’m a believer.”

Model Tested: Black with G12 Lens, MSRP $208.95

The Good

* Top-notch polarization
* Scratch-free performance
* Stylish design around town and on the trail
* Feels very comfortable
* Rubber nose pads keep them in place

The Bad

* Wide frame design doesn’t sit well on top of the head (flush carefully!)
* No rubberized earpieces
