America’s Cup Defender Alinghi Launches in Switzerland
SAILING

Last week we showed you the challenger, BMW ORACLE and their 90’x90’ Trimaran. At the same time, the defender ALINGHI launched their 90’ catamaran on Lake Geneva and put it through its initial test trials.
Incredible! That’s the sentiment felt within the sailing community.
The Cup is still going through its final stage of “land battles“ and disagreements, but a race between these two will occur in February or May next year. On August 8th Alinghi will announce the location. Speculation it will go to the highest bidder – with conducive conditionals suitable to the defender. This game plays under a whole different set of rules – and that’s part of the fascination and heritage. Most notably – the boats and the personalities. Check out Alinghi’s weapon, below.

America’s Cup – It’s On!
SAILING
The Oldest Trophy in Sport, The America’s Cup will be a one-off match race (one-on-one) between the defender Alinghi from Switzerland (skippered by our Kaenon’s Brad Butterworth) and the American Challenger, BMW Oracle (skipper and CEO, Russell Coutts and owned by Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison), in Giant Multihulls. The race is expected to take place in February and the location will be announced August 8 by the defender.
These boats are insane – gigantic multihulls that have never been designed or built of this size that will reach unheard of speeds on the course. If you’re a sailor – and even if you’re not, the America’s Cup will be a spectacle. The world-wide exposure from this event will likely be unprecedented for many reasons.
Below, BMW Oracle’s 90-foot x 90-foot Trimaran training off San Diego last week in very mild conditions.

Shea Lopez – Daytona Surf Camp
SURF – PANAMA & FLORIDA

Shea Lopez has a surf camp that just started in Daytona Beach.
“No longer facing the tour’s chaotic globetrotting, this 35-year-old is looking to make surfing a better place. And he’s starting at home.
“I’ve lived here for 10, 11 years, but for the first seven I was gone 250 days a year. I didn’t really get to leave an impression with the kids,” Lopez said.
Now Lopez has a 3½-year-old daughter catching her first waves, and he wants to teach others in the next generation of local surfers the things that have given his family a lifelong love of the sport.
Shea just finished a trip to Nicaragua and Panama, with some great exposure and with a bit of fishing on the side.

Yuri Hauswald – Kaenon Polarized Endurance Rider Goes Down
MOUNTAIN BIKE – CALIFORNIA
Tragedy strikes even the best of riders. Yuri Hauswald one of Kaenon’s beloved went down hard breaking his hand and thumb during a training ride on Whittier Bluff Road near Tomales. As a world class mountain biking competitor, Hauswald was preparing for the upcoming B.C. Bike Run when he hit a bump traveling between 25 and 30 miles per hour. Bouncing his hands off the handlebars, Yuri flipped to the ground. hitting his head, bruising his ribs and breaking his hand. Luckily, Yuri was wearing a helmet – however the hand injury required surgery that left him with with no choice but to cancel his planned trip to Canada and participation in the rugged B.C. Bike Run, a seven-stage race of some 250 miles that includes more than 30,000 feet of climbing. Read the full article here.

Race Takes a New Turn
SAILING
Race Takes a New Turn as Seb Josse Endures Day 37 in the Vendee Globe – Solo Around the World Race.
In a race that redefines the term ‘seaworthy’ – Kaenon Polarized sailor Sébastien Josse (Hard Kore G12), continues to make up time in the Vendee Globe Solo Around the World Race today and is currently only 78 miles behind the leader JP Dick (who just collided with an iceberg in the Southern Ocean this morning), and sailing at 19 knots when he reported to the Vendée Globe organizers today. The past week has seen the Vendee fleet dodging small icebergs while encountering strong storms that bring big breeze and huge waves in the treacherous Southern Ocean. The fleet is expecting very rough weather in the next 48 hours, and this morning’s quiet conditions will be a short-lived respite. To get the latest on Seb’s position and condition – visit www.btsebjosse.com.
