Los Cabos BillFish Tournament
OFFSHORE – LOS CABOS BILLFISH TOURNAMENT – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Following the shotgun start of the first fishing day of the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, the 60’ BCE Bandit, fresh from its strong finish at Catalina tournaments last month, raced ahead of the fleet to the Gordo Bank where they were able to get baited up in just a couple minutes. Just as they began trolling the baits a big black picked one up and they were on. Anthony Hsieh was on the rod, and had the fish boat-side in about 5 minutes. After a tough 15 minute battle on the gaff, the 451# black was boated – the only qualifying fish weighed on day one.

Captain Tommy, Corey, Anthony (Arlo Tortoise G12), Kevin Nakamaru (Kabin Tortoise G12) and the rest of the BANDIT Team.
Day two turned out to be groundhog day for the BANDIT boys – boating a second slightly larger black and winning both days’ jackpots to take home a whopping $420,875 for their efforts. Not a bad couple days’ work.
A very stoked Anthony Hsieh with a second $200,000 black marlin in the boat. When you’re hot you’re hot.

Meanwhile team Karma, with Angler Steve Spina, and Kona Captains Kerwin Masunaga, Boyd de Coito (UPD Black G12), Shane O’Brien (Arlo Matte Black G12) and Russ Armstrong showed up at the scales with an absolutely massive 363# yellowfin tuna.
Fishing aboard TENACIOUS, Captain Gene Vanderhoek (Rhino Black G12), Sam Choy Jr. (Rhino Matte black G12 RX), Chris Choy (Lewi Black G12), Ron Tegland Jr. (Burny Black G12) and Ron Tegland Sr. (Porter Tortoise C12) finished second in the billfish release division with 3 striped marlin released.

Brothers Chris Choy (Lewi Black G12) and Sam Choy Jr. (Rhino Matte black RX) prepare to release a striped marlin aboard TENACIOUS.

Istanbul Europa Race – Leg 3
SAILING – BARCELONA, SPAIN – BREST, FRANCE

The Spanish boat led by Kaenon Polarized skipper Guillermo Altadill – who wears Hard Kore and Rhino – is sailing the third and final leg of the Istanbul Europa Race, from Barcelona to Brest (France) and aiming for a podium position in the overall classification.
Leading after the first two legs, Estralla Damm has encountered multiple problems on this final leg from Barcelona. First, damage to their mast shortly after the start last week forced Altadill to call for a “pit stop” in Gibralter to erect repairs. However, he reversed that decision after further thought hours later deciding to “nurse” the rig and boat to the finish up the West Coast of Europe – up the Spanish coast, then the French Atlantic coast to Brest.

Estrella Damm is holding on to 3rd overall with about 400 miles to go.

Istanbul Europa Race – Leg 2
SAILING – BARCELONA, SPAIN / NICE, FRANCE

Barcelona, September 10, 2009 – Estrella Damm Sailing Team has arrived home to Barcelona. The Spanish boat crossed the finish line at 8:34 am outside the city in third place behind Groupe Bel and Foncia, after sailing the 410 miles of the second leg of the Istanbul Europa Race from Nice to Barcelona. The result means Guillermo Altadill wearing Rhino and Pachi Rivero’s team remains at the top of the overall leader board with clear options for victory in Brest (France) the final port of call of the round Europe yacht race.
Excitement was high with the results today, with three boats finishing and drawing equal on ten points: Estrella Damm who add their victory in Nice to the third place in Barcelona, Michel Desjoyeaux’s Foncia with two seconds, and Kito de Pavant’s Groupe Bel with a third victory in Barcelona.
The Spanish boat remains at the head of the overall race classification as the boat with the fastest time over the two legs: 9 days, 13 hours, 37 minutes and 6 seconds; 19 minutes faster than Foncia and 27 faster than Groupe Bel.
With such close results the days remaining until the departure of the fleet from Barcelona to Brest on Monday 14th September will be tense with excitement. The teams are all fully aware that except for some kind of unforeseeable event, the first boat to arrive in Brest will take the trophy,
“In the next leg, the first boat to arrive will win the whole race, so it will be a lot more exciting,” said Barcelona-born skipper Guillermo Altadill.
The final leg of the Europa Race started Monday,September 14 in Barcelona, Spain – Brest, France. The winner of this final leg will be the regatta winner.
As of 10:00 am CET September 15, Estrella Damm sits second. After leaving Barcelona the fleet faced a sudden storm of lightening and heavy rainfall.

Istanbul Europa Race Leg 1
SAILING – ISTANBUL, TURKEY / NICE, FRANCE

Nice, France: The first real test in competition for Estrella Damm could not have ended any better. At 04.24 and 45 seconds, Estrella Damm Sailing Team led by Kaenon sailor Guillermo Altadill wearing Kore and Rhino, crossed the finished line as winners of the first leg of the Istanbul Europa Race. The team becomes the provisional leader of the around Europe yacht race after 7 days, 17 hours, 2 minutes and 45 seconds sailing from the start of the leg in Istanbul, Turkey to Nice, France with an average boat speed of 7.45 knots. The 1450 mile leg presented a number of challenges for Guillermo Altadill and Pachi Rivero’s team who had to contend with unstable conditions and at times very little wind, as well as sail against five of the most competitive IMOCA 60s in the world. The leg has provided its fair share of memorable battles. The last head to head battle for victory with Michel Desjoyeaux’s Foncia took place in the very last few miles.
“In the end it was a good decision to stay high on leaving Corsica. That is where we managed to pass Foncia,” explained Altadill.
With only 15 miles to the finish the Spanish boat managed to slip away from the French team and open up a gap of four miles, and enough to finish the leg with a victory.
Leg 2 was from Nice, France to Barcelona, Spain – Altadill’s hometown, where Estrella Damm 1876 came in third place. Saturday 12th September the Trophy of Barcelona will be held between the port and Olympic Port in the city, enabling the general public to follow the IMOCA 60 racing at close hand; many of the boats in the fleet will be taking part in the Barcelona World Race 2010/11.

World Sailfish Series Leg 2 – Costa Rica
FISHING
COSTA RICA – LOS SUENOS BILLFISH SERIES – LEG 2
Fishing in Costa Rica is usually pretty good….but nobody ever remembers it as good as it was last weekend for the second leg of the Los Suenos Billfish Series. A patch of cooler water brought in a concentration of marlin never before seen in Costa Rican waters. 40 boats released 391 Marlin and 172 Sailfish in 3 days of wide open fishing.
Hooked up to a powerful blue marlin on light tackle Pat Healey in Kabin Black G12 reels like a madman as Captain Tony Carrizosa throws Game On’s twin 1365 horsepower diesels in hard reverse.

Pat’s Blue Marlin lit up next to the boat

Game On eventually took third place overall, helped along by a Grand Slam Triple Header on day 2. Catching a Grand Slam = Stripe Marlin, Blue Marlin and Sailfish all at the same time is a once in a lifetime occurrence- something that has only happened a handful of times in history.
Controlled Chaos as Don Gemmel, Carmine Galati and Drew Mcdowell fight 3 fish simultaneously.

Carmine Galati, Lewi Tobbacco C12, works on a striped marlin
The first fish released on the triple header was a Striped Marlin

Followed by a blue marlin which went ballistic next to the boat
Hans Alvarado, Rhino Black G12, finally releases the third fish of the slam- a sailfish.

Happy Hookers- Carmine Galati, Hans Alvarado, Pat Healey and Jim Nestor celebrate after 3 days of record setting fishing.

Rolex Ceremony
SAILING

ROLEX US YACHTSMAN AND YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR CEREMONY
New York Yacht Club (Manhattan, NYC) – The New York Yacht Club’s renowned Model Room was the setting for celebrating Terry Hutchinson’s (Annapolis, Md.) and Anna Tunnicliffe’s (Plantation, Fla.) 2008 competitive sailing achievements as family, friends, sailing dignitaries and members of the press looked on. Terry races in Kore and Rhino, Anna in Beacon, Baton and Georgia.
Determined from nominations submitted by the members of US SAILING, a short list of nine male and five female sailors was evaluated by a panel of sailing journalists who ultimately selected Hutchinson and Tunnicliffe the 2008 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.
Hutchinson (age 40), a first-time winner, redefined himself as a well-rounded fleet racer after emerging from his stint as tactician aboard Emirates Team New Zealand in the 32nd America’s Cup. He racked up four major European victories in the TP52 before skippering to become that class’s World Champion. He also scored major U.S. regatta victories in the Farr 40, Melges 24, M30 and Melges 32 classes, also as tactician.
Tunnicliffe (age 26), also a first-time winner, was cited for her rise to number one in the world rankings and her gold-medal performance in the Laser Radial at the 2008 Olympic Games in China. Her excellent 2008 sailing resume made her the panel’s unanimous choice for the award. Read the full story at USSailing.org

World Sailfish Series Leg 1 – Costa Rica
FISHING

WORLD SAILFISH SERIES – Los Suenos Signature Series Leg 1– Costa Rica
42 boats participated in the first leg of the Los Suenos Billfish series last week, a record turnout despite a tough economic environment. Costa Rica is known for some of the greatest concentrations of Sailfish in the world, and this year’s conditions didn’t disappoint. Over the course of 3 days fishing, the 42 boat fleet released a staggering 788 billfish, including 44 Marlin.
Los Suenos Resort’s 250 slip marina boasts some serious big rigs and being only a 2 ½ hour flight from Miami, it is a top destination for East Coast fishing nuts. The majority of professional crews running the boats in the marina hail from Palm Beach, Maryland and New Jersey. Will James was invited to ride along with Kaenon Ambassador Captain Tony Carizoss, wearing Hard Kore Black C12, and his crew aboard the new Viking 50 “Game On”.
The new Viking 50 and 60 sitting pole position at the A dock. These two boats (left) are the fastest in the marina, topping out at over 50 mph. Don’t bother asking about the fuel bill. (Right) Back window of the Viking 50 demo boat.
Anglers Pat Healey, wearing Kabin Black G12, Bill Hixon in Spindle S2 G12 hooked up to double sailfish.

Mate Jimmy Nestor, UPD Matte Black G12, prepares to release a Striped Marlin (left) and later releasing a sailfish (right).

After gorging themselves all night on baitfish in the cool depths, sailfish can be seen in great numbers in the morning sunning themselves, sails up, on the surface. The sail on a sailfish serves two purposes, herding baitfish while feeding, and in this case collecting the warmth of the sun in order to aid digestion. Fish seen sunning in this manner are rarely in the mood to feed.

A sailfish attacks a hookless teaser pulled from the outriggers. Teasers and rubber squid chains bring fish into the spread behind the boat, the teasers are then pulled out of the water with electric reels from the bridge and the crew drops ballyhoo equipped with circle hooks to excited fish for the hookup.
Jimmy Nestor again face to face with a ballistic sailfish.

A Wahoo, the fastest fish in the sea (many consider the best tasting), is a welcome catch. At Los Suenos all billfish are released…but Wahoo aren’t so lucky. Mate Hans Alvarado, Rhino Black G12, brings in dinner over the stern.

Will James, Lewi Black Pearl G12, earned his supper spotting fish coming into the spread behind the boat. Perched 50 feet up, spotters can see fish well before the crew on the back deck, and are crucial in coordinating how and when the baits are dropped back to the fish and how many fish are in the spread. ADVANTAGE = Kaenon Polarized and SR-91. The head wrap, in addition to hat and Kaenon’s, helps cut out the extreme glare and harsh sun reflecting off the water. In contrast, for those who prefer the warm rays of sunshine over fishing, there’s always the bow cushion.

Sailing Successes
SAILING
The Mt. Everest of sailing, the Vendee Globe solo ’round the world race, set sail from Les Sables d’Olonne, France in front of 100,000’s of fans. Kaenon adorns two of the race’s 30 sailors: defending champ Vincent Riou (Rhino Rx) of France at the helm of PRB and Frenchman Sebastien Josse (Hard Kore) on BT. Both will count on the unparalleled clarity of their SR-91 lenses to read the water and protect their vision from nature’s harshest elements.
The two most decorated sailors of these past Olympics, Alessandra Sensini of Italy and Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie, took home Rolex World Sailor of the Year honors. Could their Kaenon’s have had something to do with their success?
