After a tough three and a half hour battle on 130lb line with heavy drag, the fish was brought within range and gaffed. Jason and Brian release the vast majority of their blue marlin catches, but, this fish looked big enough to make it over the mark. Sure enough, with a 142 inch short measurement (tip of lower jaw to fork of tail), the blue went 1,104 pounds at the scale.

Of the three marlin species that can grow over 1,000 pounds (Atlantic, Pacific and Black) the Pacific Blue marlin is the most elusive and is truly a career defining catch. This fish registers as the first Grander caught anywhere in the world in 2010.

Jason is no stranger to the company of big fish—he has leadered three grander black marlin, including an 1,103 pound on Australia’s great barrier reef, as well as an 1,357 pound Atlantic blue in the Azores, making him part of the highly exclusive triple grander club, whose other known members, Kevin Nakamura and Oskie Rice, also hail from Kona.

Day two turned out to be groundhog day for the BANDIT boys – boating a second slightly larger black and winning both days’ jackpots to take home a whopping $420,875 for their efforts. Not a bad couple days’ work.

A very stoked Anthony Hsieh with a second $200,000 black marlin in the boat. When you’re hot you’re hot.

Meanwhile team Karma, with Angler Steve Spina, and Kona Captains Kerwin Masunaga, Boyd de Coito (UPD Black G12), Shane O’Brien (Arlo Matte Black G12) and Russ Armstrong showed up at the scales with an absolutely massive 363# yellowfin tuna.

Brian “Bear” Holeman, wearing Rhino Tobacco G12, holds a nice redfish. The Holeman brothers, Travis and Brian along with the crew from World Angling Productions won The Drake magazine’s Fly Fishing Film awards this weekend at FFR show in Denver.

Excitement was high with the results today, with three boats finishing and drawing equal on ten points: Estrella Damm who add their victory in Nice to the third place in Barcelona, Michel Desjoyeaux’s Foncia with two seconds, and Kito de Pavant’s Groupe Bel with a third victory in Barcelona.

The Spanish boat remains at the head of the overall race classification as the boat with the fastest time over the two legs: 9 days, 13 hours, 37 minutes and 6 seconds; 19 minutes faster than Foncia and 27 faster than Groupe Bel.

With such close results the days remaining until the departure of the fleet from Barcelona to Brest on Monday 14th September will be tense with excitement. The teams are all fully aware that except for some kind of unforeseeable event, the first boat to arrive in Brest will take the trophy,

“In the next leg, the first boat to arrive will win the whole race, so it will be a lot more exciting,” said Barcelona-born skipper Guillermo Altadill.

The final leg of the Europa Race started Monday,September 14 in Barcelona, Spain – Brest, France. The winner of this final leg will be the regatta winner.

As of 10:00 am CET September 15, Estrella Damm sits second. After leaving Barcelona the fleet faced a sudden storm of lightening and heavy rainfall.

“In the end it was a good decision to stay high on leaving Corsica. That is where we managed to pass Foncia,” explained Altadill.

With only 15 miles to the finish the Spanish boat managed to slip away from the French team and open up a gap of four miles, and enough to finish the leg with a victory.

Leg 2 was from Nice, France to Barcelona, Spain – Altadill’s hometown, where Estrella Damm 1876 came in third place. Saturday 12th September the Trophy of Barcelona will be held between the port and Olympic Port in the city, enabling the general public to follow the IMOCA 60 racing at close hand; many of the boats in the fleet will be taking part in the Barcelona World Race 2010/11.

But don’t let the sun keep you off the water. Just dress for the season and you will be ready for your next flats fishing trip or sea kayaking adventure.

Game On eventually took third place overall, helped along by a Grand Slam Triple Header on day 2. Catching a Grand Slam = Stripe Marlin, Blue Marlin and Sailfish all at the same time is a once in a lifetime occurrence- something that has only happened a handful of times in history.

New York Yacht Club (Manhattan, NYC) – The New York Yacht Club’s renowned Model Room was the setting for celebrating Terry Hutchinson’s (Annapolis, Md.) and Anna Tunnicliffe’s (Plantation, Fla.) 2008 competitive sailing achievements as family, friends, sailing dignitaries and members of the press looked on. Terry races in Kore and Rhino, Anna in Beacon, Baton and Georgia.

Determined from nominations submitted by the members of US SAILING, a short list of nine male and five female sailors was evaluated by a panel of sailing journalists who ultimately selected Hutchinson and Tunnicliffe the 2008 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.

Hutchinson (age 40), a first-time winner, redefined himself as a well-rounded fleet racer after emerging from his stint as tactician aboard Emirates Team New Zealand in the 32nd America’s Cup. He racked up four major European victories in the TP52 before skippering to become that class’s World Champion. He also scored major U.S. regatta victories in the Farr 40, Melges 24, M30 and Melges 32 classes, also as tactician.

Tunnicliffe (age 26), also a first-time winner, was cited for her rise to number one in the world rankings and her gold-medal performance in the Laser Radial at the 2008 Olympic Games in China. The majority of professional crews running the boats in the marina hail from Palm Beach, Maryland and New Jersey. Will James was invited to ride along with Kaenon Ambassador Captain Tony Carizoss, wearing Hard Kore Black C12, and his crew aboard the new Viking 50 “Game On”.

After gorging themselves all night on baitfish in the cool depths, sailfish can be seen in great numbers in the morning sunning themselves, sails up, on the surface. The sail on a sailfish serves two purposes, herding baitfish while feeding, and in this case collecting the warmth of the sun in order to aid digestion. Fish seen sunning in this manner are rarely in the mood to feed.

A sailfish attacks a hookless teaser pulled from the outriggers. Teasers and rubber squid chains bring fish into the spread behind the boat, the teasers are then pulled out of the water with electric reels from the bridge and the crew drops ballyhoo equipped with circle hooks to excited fish for the hookup.

A Wahoo, the fastest fish in the sea (many consider the best tasting), is a welcome catch. At Los Suenos all billfish are released…but Wahoo aren’t so lucky. Mate Hans Alvarado, Rhino Black G12, brings in dinner over the stern.

Will James, Lewi Black Pearl G12, earned his supper spotting fish coming into the spread behind the boat. Perched 50 feet up, spotters can see fish well before the crew on the back deck, and are crucial in coordinating how and when the baits are dropped back to the fish and how many fish are in the spread. ADVANTAGE = Kaenon Polarized and SR-91. The head wrap, in addition to hat and Kaenon’s, helps cut out the extreme glare and harsh sun reflecting off the water. In contrast, for those who prefer the warm rays of sunshine over fishing, there’s always the bow cushion.

The Mt. Everest of sailing, the Vendee Globe solo ’round the world race, set sail from Les Sables d’Olonne, France in front of 100,000’s of fans.
