Offshore Fishing – Blue Marlin
OFFSHORE FISHING – Kona, HI
Gene Vanderhoek and crew Chris Choy (Porter Black G12) have been racking up the blue marlin releases in Kona this summer aboard the Sea Genie 2.

Gene has been winning the IFGA award for most Blue Marlin released anywhere in the Pacific for the last several years, Chris and Gene successfully released 86 blue marlin during the 2008 season.

The Pacific shortnose spearfish are the rarest of all billfish species, but actually quite common in Hawaiian waters. The Sea Genie crew release all of these too.

All in a day’s work- 3 blue marlin and a spearfish released by 3pm. These guys make it look easy. Chris hoists the release flags as the boat arrives back at Honokohau harbor.

America’s Cup Defender Alinghi Launches in Switzerland
SAILING

Last week we showed you the challenger, BMW ORACLE and their 90’x90’ Trimaran. At the same time, the defender ALINGHI launched their 90’ catamaran on Lake Geneva and put it through its initial test trials.
Incredible! That’s the sentiment felt within the sailing community.
The Cup is still going through its final stage of “land battles“ and disagreements, but a race between these two will occur in February or May next year. On August 8th Alinghi will announce the location. Speculation it will go to the highest bidder – with conducive conditionals suitable to the defender. This game plays under a whole different set of rules – and that’s part of the fascination and heritage. Most notably – the boats and the personalities. Check out Alinghi’s weapon, below.

British Open at Turnberry Golf Club
GOLF – TURNBERRY, SCOTLAND
Tom Watson – what a show!
John Daly, wearing Spindle S2 C50, C28 and even C12 golf sunglasses during the varying weather of the British Open on the Scottish west coast delivered a solid Open showing he’s re-committed to his golf game and has the ability to produce quality results. John Daly finished at +4, same as Davis Love, III who will go under the Laser this week to have Lasik corrective surgery on his eyes. Robert Allenby never got anything going and neither Rod Pampling or Brian Gay made the cut.

John Daly and his girlfriend Anna, put on her own fashion show, matching her Kaenon’s to her/his daily outfit.

Danica Patrick – Iowa Corn Indy 250
AUTO RACING INDY CAR SERIES – NEWTON, IA
Danica Patrick led about 22 laps of the Iowa Corn Indy 250, before flat tires and bad luck intervened. Her comment after the race:
“We started off with a good car, but it just wasn’t our day. We got a couple flat tires at the beginning of the race, which was a bummer but then we just changed up the strategy a bit, which allowed us to lead a few laps. But then the yellows started to come out and we were at the wrong place at the wrong time. But it was a top-10 finish for us, so if this is the worst finish we have this season, I can’t complain.”
Danica Patrick: Started 5th, finished 9th

“Best Sunglasses I’ve Ever Worn”
PRODUCT REVIEW
This was too good to modify so we’ve pasted here directly from the Seattle Times Travel & Outdoors Post: Gift ideas for those who love the outdoors
The Seattle Times’ gear tester draws up a 2008 Christmas list.
By Dan Nelson
Special to The Seattle Times
Even Santa needs a hand at times to find the perfect present for an outdoor enthusiast. With that in mind, we put together the following suggestions. If you haven’t been naughty, you might find one or more of these under your tree this year.
We start with the pricey and end with the price-conscious.
Kaenon Hard Kore sunglasses
There’s no other way to say it: These are the best sunglasses I’ve ever worn. The frames are stylish, yet remarkably comfortable, even after being worn all day in a driving wind. The polarized lenses are optically pure, with no distortion or blurring, and nicely tinted to cut harsh light while boasting contrast and object definition. This means bumps in snow and texture on water are easily seen even when zipping along at maximum speed. Whether worn while skiing, biking, fly-fishing or hiking, these glasses outperformed every other model of eyewear. At $209, the price is steep, but the quality is unmatched.
